MySQL HELP! (For use with SyMap)

Hi everyone

I'm trying to use SyMap to draw up some synteny maps and for I have been trying to get MySQL up and running in order to run larger data sets.

From the MySQL website I have started to download, unpack and install MySQL up to the Post installation process. However, I keep running into errors!

Either, the scripts given on the website describe files in folders that aren't there or MySQL simply won't run etc.

I am trying to do this using MySQL 5.6.2 I think? And this is on a virtual box of Linux Mint on a Windows machine - could that be my problem? Could anyone please point me to somewhere with more information on starting up MySQL?!

Thanks!

Saying there's an error is not helpful. Please provide whatever error messages you're getting. They usually give clues about what is wrong.
I also think this is off topic here. You should probably try asking on Stack Overflow.

SyMap comes with its own MySQL installation, is there any reason to not use that?

I propose to label this off-topic despite the application. Installing dependencies of bioinformatics software that are not bioinformatics software itself is not covered by this site.

As a general advice, you should use the package manager of your distribution to install software as much as possible.
