I will say what I pretty much always recommend to beginners: Get a supervisor. This person must be experienced in the field and should provide a well-defined project with a clear analysis goal while being not too extensive and complex for a beginner. Do not start things on your own as this will take a lot of time especially because bioinformatics offers a lot of opportunities while having little to no standards when it comes to best practices for data analysis.
