Programatically Access The Ncbi Images Database

Is it possible to download and extract images and metadata from the NCBI images database? This was formerly at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/images but is currently redirecting to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/. I would like to, for a given PubMed ID, be able to download the attached figures and legends, and hopefully have some kind of persistent identifier for each image.
