Postive And Negative Strands Of Dna And Gene Location

Genes on DNA strands r at times on positive strand and negative strand. While transcription takes place from both strands (depending where the gene is). How come a particular gene is on one strand and not the other. After all DNA strands are complementary....

I do agree that the question is more about biology but many aspiring bioinformaticians may not have the sufficient background to realize that. As for the question: genes are translated to proteins and that uniquely defines which strand they are coming from.
