Online course: Introduction to Genome Annotation (19–22 May 2025)

We are pleased to announce that registrations are open for the upcoming online course "Introduction to Genome Annotation", taking place from 19 to 22 May 2025.


Course overview

Genome annotation is a key step in genomics, as the quality and usefulness of a genome assembly rely on accurate annotation. This course will provide a practical introduction to genome annotation workflows, covering:

  • Sample quality requirements and sequencing platforms
  • Ab initio and de novo transcriptome assembly
  • Evidence-guided gene prediction (e.g., BRAKER, Augustus)
  • Construction and evaluation of gene models
  • Strategies for tackling genome-specific challenges

Target audience

This course is designed for PhD students, postdocs, and researchers working on genome annotation projects who are looking to deepen their understanding of available strategies and tools. Basic knowledge of the UNIX command line is essential; familiarity with Python is a plus.


Learning outcomes

Participants will learn to:

  • Set up and run an annotation pipeline for their genome of interest
  • Navigate common challenges in annotation
  • Use widely adopted tools to produce and assess gene predictions

Schedule: Daily sessions from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM (Berlin time)
