News: Genome Assembly and Annotation course (online, 17-21 March 2025)

Title: Online Course: Assembly and Annotation of Genomes (March 17-21, 2025)

Overview:
Join us for a comprehensive online course, Assembly and Annotation of Genomes, from March 17-21, 2025. This course is designed to equip biologists and bioinformaticians with the theoretical and practical skills needed for de novo genome assembly and annotation.

We will cover a range of sequencing technologies (Illumina, PacBio HiFi/CLR, Oxford Nanopore) and scaffolding methods (optical mapping, Hi-C), and introduce tools for quality control (Genomescope, Merqury, Pretext) and annotation (RNA-Seq, IsoSeq). Special topics include Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) genome assembly and its significance.

Through a mix of lectures and hands-on sessions, participants will learn to generate high-quality, haplotype-phased, reference genomes with effective annotation strategies.

Target Audience:
This course is suitable for researchers at all levels:

  • Beginners seeking foundational knowledge in genome assembly and annotation.
  • Advanced users aiming to refine their workflows with the latest tools and technologies.

No prior experience in sequencing or Linux is required (though familiarity with Linux is welcome).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Grasp core concepts of de novo genome assembly and annotation across various genome sizes.
  • Understand the strengths and limitations of different sequencing and scaffolding technologies.
  • Gain practical experience with tools for genome assembly, quality evaluation, visualization, and annotation.
  • Develop the ability to create high-quality, annotated, and curated reference genomes.
