Choosing the appropriate covariates for quantitative gwas model

Hello everyone, I start to work on my first GWAS project. The phenotype is the continuous trait. I have some covariates that I need to adjust in PLINK. My question is how I can decide which covariates I should include in the model to maximize the power of detecting the signal and prevent possible type 1/2 error? PS: What I did was I regressed the phenotype on all covariates (not include PC1, PC2) and include the one that reach significant threshold in multiple linear regression. I don't know if there is any paper about this issue. I appreciate the help.
