Tutorial: List Of Bioinformatics Books

This is a list of oriented topics of bioinformatics books. I see that it might help for new comers searching for special topics Bioinformatics books list by category, some of them are old so I hope that our fellows in BioStars suggest books that you should read or have in your shelf if you are bioinformation or interested in that field.

for me my first intro to bioinformatics was bioinformatics for dummies :)

after that I was opened more to bioinformatics field I read those introductory books

  • Phylogenetic Trees Made Easy: A How-To Manual
  • Computational Biology: Unix/Linux, Data Processing and Programming
  • Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics by James D. Tisdall
  • Essential Bioinformatics
  • Head first Java
  • Head first Python
  • Bioinformatics for High Throughput Sequencing

bioinformatics for dummies

That's a good book! The T-Coffee guy wrote it. It was my first book too. It demystifies things a lot.

Bioinformatics and functional genomics - Jonathan Pevsner
This book has an easy way of explaining most common problems and solutions of Bioinformatics.

Pevsner is a fantastic book

Practical Computing for Biologists

This is the best intro book out (IMO)

+1 for enhancing the topic but i did not read it yet

Even I have a computational background I skimmed through the book which is very good, I would recommend to Biologists. Thanks for sharing.

From relatively recent books I liked a lot "Practical Bioinformatics" edited by Janusz Bujnicki, but my long-time favourite is "Biological sequence analysis" by Richard Durbin, Sean R. Eddy, Anders Krogh and Graeme Mitchison (wonderful coverage of basic stuff in bioinformatics).

And the solution manual that accompanies Durbin's book

Introduction to Bioinformatics. OUP press by Arthur M Lesk is very good for beginners from biology

Next Generation Sequencing and Data Analysis (Learning Materials in Biosciences) is a really good introduction too

Algorithms in Bioinformatics: Theory and Implementation from John Wiley & Sons by Gagniuc (me). Is highly explicit and it has countless implementations for free.
