Please explain me how we have got eq 3.17 from eq 3.16 [1] I am new to evolutionary biology with no math background thus facing problem. I have been able to solve till 3.16 but stuck after that.

This is not bioinformatics, but calculus. The last step has to do with Leibniz's notation, check wiki if that sounds unfamiliar.
