Is there a rule in Biostars on how to handle expired jobs offers? Should we close the offer, or flag it somehow? This would help job seekers and job posters.

Posts tagged as "Job" should be required to have an "expiration" date. If OP chooses not to use this feature then all such posts past a 2 month period can be marked as "closed". If a job is still open then the OP can go back in and re-edit the original post to activate it for another 2 month period/up to expiration date (which ever is earlier).

That would be very useful

I always put the closing date for applications in the post, so you should check that.

How long do most people's job adverts stay up? Ours are six weeks. I would generally assume anything over two months old was dead anyway.

As far as I know, there is no precise rule, but it would definitely be nice to adapt the posts with e.g. [POSITION FILLED] to avoid job seekers pursuing a job which is no longer available or make clear when an application closes.

People ideally should (and many usually do) follow up and post an update once a position is filled, but you can always send them an email and check with them.
