What 2 indicates in 2*150 bp, 2*300 bp maximum read length from Illumina website http://www.illumina.com/systems/sequencing-platforms.html?

Dear Bioinformaticians,

I was looking at various Illumina sequencing platforms here http://www.illumina.com/systems/sequencing-platforms.html.

What 2 indicates in 2x150 bp, 2x300 bp maximum read length from Illumina website http://www.illumina.com/systems/sequencing-platforms.html?

I would be grateful if anybody can answer this?

illumina read length denovo assembly

I edited your post because you use (probably not desired) markup, e.g. * will result in text in italics

That refers to the direction(s) of sequencing: paired end sequencing. Essentially, in 2x150bp you are sequencing once 150bp in one direction of the molecule, and once in the other direction.

If you have a molecule of 400bp you would sequence 150bp from each side, leaving a gap of 100bp in the middle.

Hello WouterDeCoster,

Thanks for editing my question and the answer. If I assemble forward and reverse end reads where each of them are of length 150 bp , then saying "assembling the reads of 150 bp is correct" or saying "assembling the reads of 300 bp is correct" ?

Also, I'm looking for the Denovo assemblers which can assemble reads of length 300 bp. Do you know any assemblers which can assemble reads of 300 bp?

No, you don't have reads of 300bp then. You have paired end 150bp reads.

For a bunch of tools for assembly, have a look at omictools. I can't give you more accurate advice for this, perhaps someone else.

Hello WouterDeCoster, Thanks for answering my question. As you said I'll look at omictools website.
