A postdoctoral position in genome informatics and computational biology are available in the Beyster Center for Genomics of Psychiatric Disease and the Institute for Genomic Medicine at UC San Diego (http://igm.ucsd.edu). We seek to understand the genetic basis of disease by Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) in families, and by integrating data on de novo mutation and inherited genetic variation, including structural variants (SVs), nucleotide substitutions and indels. Our laboratory is developing novel approaches for the identification of risk genes for developmental and psychiatric disorders. We are initiating new studies focused on genome wide analysis of mutation in human populations and in autism using long-read sequencing platforms such as 10X genomics and Pacific Biosciences.

Central to these studies is the development of new bioinformatics approaches to the analysis of large genomic datasets. Computational approaches under development include:

  1. The design of statistical-learning methods for the analysis of complex structural and sequence variation detectable only by long-read sequencing.
  2. Development of novel methods for functional classification of complex genetic variants by integration of large functional genomic datasets
  3. Diagnostic classification of patients by integration of patient genomic and clinical data

We are seeking talented and highly motivated computational scientists with an interest in developing and applying new bioinformatics approaches to large scale genetic studies. Excellent bioinformatic and programming skills, a background in genomics and a strong publication record are required. Applicants should send a CV and a list of three references by email to jsebat@ucsd.edu.
