Hi everyone! I've just recently found this forum and wanted to get some more information about how to get into bioinformatics. I'm currently at a british university studying Physiology however I think I would be interested in a career centred more on using computers than physically doing lab work (as a side note: I am unsure whether or not lab work is a prominent aspect of the job, please correct me if this is the case!). This summer I plan on doing some courses on coursera focusing on data handling and perhaps use of python/r, and hopefully aim to get into a masters programme in bioinformatics if I enjoy it. I would love to do more hands-on work at some point however, whether it simply be voluntary work using data in general just to have it under my belt. I was wondering if any of you had any thoughts/ideas for me going down this career path, or any advice in general you could give?

In addition to what already has been posted. Read: Wet-Lab Guide to 'what I wish I had known' for Computational Biology
