Hello,

I am currently a master student which will continue in doctoral student next October. During summer next year, I must go abroad (outside Japan) to go for internship or any other form oof internship (summer school, workshop, etc). I want to ask about the availability of 3 months summer school, short course, workshop, etc. in Bioinformatics. Is there any place you know that you can suggest to me? My skills in Bioinformatics is still weak and I'm afraid that I'm not good enough to work as intern in a research institute. That's why I'm asking about short course, workshop, etc. which I can get some experience. It will be better if the workshop has a final project or anything like that to improve skills and experience. Thank you.

Most summer courses bioinformatics are one or two weeks, see e.g,

https://www.ebi.ac.uk/training/events/2016/summer-school-bioinformatics

http://bioinformatics.msu.edu/ngs-summer-course-2016

I think 3 months is also too short for a real internship, especially when you also have to learn much of bioinformatics. At my institute I only take interns for at least 6 months.

Yeah, that is the problem. Many internship I know is more that 3 months and workshop last only for several weeks. The funding from my university will only for 3 months.

Our Programming for Evolutionary Biology workshop is about 3 weeks long: http://evop.bioinf.uni-leipzig.de/ . I can assure that organizing just these three weeks requires quite a lot of efforts and commitment. I couldn't imagine the stress of organizing a three months course :-)

I don't think that there are 3-months long bioinformatics courses, but there are some very good data science bootcamps. See for example: http://www.thisismetis.com/data-science or http://www.skilledup.com/articles/list-data-science-bootcamps. Google Summer of Codes also take about that amount of time, although they are usually done from home.

I also think that 3 months is too short for a internship, but if you contact many universities or industry I am sure you will get some positive answer. Specially if you can provide your own fundings.

GSOC applications closed a week ago, so that's out until next year.

The university will cover for everything so I think that is quite a relieve then.

Bootcamp, course, or workshop is okay. The important thing is 3 months outside of Japan. In one of my friend case, he applied for a short semester in US for english language though. He is in different field than mine but I think it just give me an example not only internship but some "course" is okay too. Your link to the bootcamp is really nice. I will check it. Thank you very much.
