SNP: direction of effects

Hi everybody,

Please, can somebody explain me the meaning of the direction of effect of SNPs (SNPs with the same/opposite direction of effect) in a GWAS study?

Perhaps you could give an example of where this is used. My guess is that "directions" are "beneficial" and "deleterious", but I can come up with other meanings.
