how to update autoconf without root privilege

I am using our university's computer cluster in which autoconf 2.59 has been installed. Now I need to update that to version 2.69. Basically I installed that successfully in my own directory, after ./configure, make, make install. The reason I believe I did that successfully is that there was no any errors during installation. However, when I check the version, $ autoconf --version, it says it is still 2.59. How can I solve this problem? Thanks.

That's not a bioinformatics question. It's just systems admin. You could ask the university to upgrade their software, it's the admins job to keep the system up to date. I guess the problem is your command is running the system version and you need to add the new one to the $PATH.
