You probably selected the package for a Mac, which contains just the binaries. There is no Makefile or configure script in this distribution, so that explains your errors. If you want to compile the source for some reason, select the package with "source" in the filename, then try "make" again. Even though it sounds like you solved your issue with Homebrew, I thought I would answer this for those that are curious (or may find themselves here in the future).
