Multiple transcripts encoding for one protein
Trying to get a better understanding of the process of DNA to proteins.
So when we have a gene, it is read from the 5' to 3' end, only reading the exons. A single gene can have multiple exons, and use alternative splicing to create different transcripts. A transcript may result in mRNA (not necessarily right? Also other kinds of RNA?) which is translated to amino acids. Finally folded to a functional protein.
My question here, are there different transcripts (say in different genes) that encode for the same protein?

Then I don't understand what the boundaries of bioinformatics are. You need information on the biology itself, otherwise you are just doing informatics... You must make assumptions, based on what is presumed to be correct. If you look at the Ensembl database you see that one transcript (at most) links to one protein. If I were to presume that to be by definition (which is where the question is about), then I would make a 1-n relation whereas it should have been a m-n relation.

Answer is yes: != transcript can encode same protein.!=means does not equal. But alternative splicing does not result in different transcript (as far as I understand) because a specific form of splicing is a transcript, but from a single gene...While you need to be knowledgeable in biology to do bioinformatics, not all biology questions are appropriate on a bioinformatics site. Yours, for example, is just a basic biology question, so it's appropriate on a general biology site, but not a bioinformatics site (or other specialized site, like one on neuroscience, or protein folding).
