R square of the NMDS analysis

Hi,all; I ran a non metric multidimensional scaling model (nmds) on a 16s otu table;I can get a stress value and a R square for each Iterator.For all I know NMDS has no % variation explained values and I will choose the max R square.But I have read some papers,such as http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3420156/

In fig3 each axis has a R square value just like some kind of % variation explained values.I don't know how to get these R square or I understand error. Maybe a stupid question, any help will be appreciated.
