Does Newbler Take Into Account Known Points Of Variation?

I've noticed that newbler reads snp data if it is included in database/snpxxx.txt when running runMapping. Does anyone know if this information is used to make improved alignments? i.e: that information could help in assigning gaps when dealing with homopolymer error.
