Post Doctoral Research Assistant in Bioinformatics and Population Genetics (Ref: 077)

  • Salary: £31,644 - £36,661 per annum.
  • Department of Vector Biology, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine(LSTM), UK.
  • Full time, Fixed-Term appointment for up to 36 months subject to meeting project milestones

LSTM is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research in tropical diseases. The creation of effective links with governments, organisations and institutions and responding to the health needs of communities allows LSTM to promote improved health, particularly for people of the less developed / resource poorest countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.

We are seeking to appoint a Post Doctoral Research Assistant to work as part of an LSTM based multidisciplinary team of scientists involved on a Wellcome Trust funded project on the genetic basis of insecticide resistance in the malaria vector Anopheles funestus. Additionally you will also explore how patterns of genetic structure and gene flow can impact the spread of resistance. The project focuses on the use of next-generation sequencing (RNA-seq, target enrichment of candidate regions and whole genome sequencing) and bioinformatics tools to detect the genes and genetic mutations associated with insecticide resistance.

Working within an active vector biology group, you will undertake research work on analysing next-generation sequencing data, some of which are already available as well as working collaboratively with project partners at the Centre of Genomic research at the University of Liverpool and the Broad Institute. The post will therefore require you to have a solid background in population genetics, bioinformatics and application of programming skills to analyse next-generation sequencing data.

With a PhD in biological or computer sciences, you will have a range of skills including genetic laboratory techniques and analysis of genotypic and next generation sequence data.

We are looking for an individual with excellent communication skills (both written and verbal), strong analytical and research skills, plus the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of disciplines. You must possess excellent time management and organisational skills to achieve research objectives independent of day to day supervision.

The position may require travel to disease endemic countries to provide support to other researchers working in the field. Previous experience working with insect vectors is desirable but not essential.

If you are interested in applying, please return your completed Application Form, Personal Details Form and Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form together with a copy of your CV, stating vacancy reference number 077, via email to Lstmjobs@liverpool.ac.uk or by post to HR, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Pembroke Place, Liverpool L3 5QA.

Closing Date: Wednesday 23rd April 2014 (12 noon UK time)
