Forum: Advice on spatial transcriptomics tool

Hey there,

I'm developing a web-based tool for the analysis of spatial transcriptomics datasets.

Through my experience in research I saw how frequently people don't get the most out of their data due to a lack of time/skill/knowledge-of-what-you-can-do, so this is my attempt at solving this problem.

However, whilst this fixes a problem I've observed in the lab and in publications that heartbreakingly treat spatial datasets like scRNA-seq, I'm not sure a tool like this is actually something that researchers want or need.

If anyone here has any feedback on this or advice for how I could work this out that would be highly appreciated! Please feel free to comment any thoughts you may have.

Though in it's beta-stage, I'm also happy to connect to let you take it for a spin!

Just to calibrate my answer, have you developed tools before, do you have an idea on the required effort to bring it to publication-quality and can estimate maintenance burden?

Some additional information will help get useful answers. This tool will run in a web browser and all compute happens in cloud? Are you wrapping up already available programs/algorithms or will this be something new you have developed.

Have you thought about how you will monetize this tool (perhaps not for profit but at least so you can break even) when it gets released (if you are envisioning people coming to your site to use it)?

That said, good tools (specially those not needing programming skills and are freely available) are always appreciated.

That's right - it'll run in a web browser with compute in cloud. We're wrapping some algorithms that are code-intensive to apply into a GUI and putting in some of our own tools for analysis. Though the main value of the product is that it's drag-and-drop with raw data, and then you can easily see all the directions you can take it in.

To monetise it, just to cover server hosting and operating costs, we were planning to have a tiered subscription model. Though this does seem to spook people.
