Forum: computer science (undergrad) interested in starting a portfolio showcasing informatics skills

I am an undergrad studying computer science and I hope to one day support a life sciences department involved in bioinformatics.

As of now I have mainly taken my computer science course work. This year I am a junior and would like to start developing skills towards the general direction of bioinformatics. I am comfortable with C++, C#, sql, Python, .NET and vs-code and git.

The life sciences courses I have taken that I imagine would help me understand some of the biology parts are these courses that I took. Molecular Biology Chemistry

I would like to ask for some guidance on what are some beginner friendly tasks with my skills set and knowledge base that I could try to self teach and showcase on my GitHub.

I would greatly appreciate any search terms or description of processes that could be helpful for my mission.

Thanks in advance!
