To further develop and grow this ambition we are looking for a Scientist Bioinformatics.
As Bioinformatics Scientist you build knowledge and insights from biological data to support gene discovery and marker development. Together with bioinformatics colleagues at BASF | Nunhems, you are responsible for managing our genome-wide digital genetic resources, such as gold standard reference genomes, high quality gene annotation and population-wide re-sequencing.
You provide methods to create, explore and analyze large genetic resources, geared towards next-generation and long-read sequencing. You will be responsible for designing and implementing advanced machine learning models, bioinformatic analysis and data mining strategies to identify, predict and optimize desired traits.
Major Accountabilities
Pipeline development and Maintenance
Use industry-standard methods to create and maintain data-analysis applications (e.g. git, test-driven, agile/scrum) Develop and implement pipelines for functional gene annotation You will write and optimize code for data processing, and data visualization You will develop workflows within the Computational Biology team as well as independently develop custom scripts
Data analysis
Align with molecular breeding and genomic scientists on experimental design, project goals and applications Develop data visualizations and dashboards to present findings to stakeholders, making complex data accessible to non-technical audiences Analyzing and comparing biological and NGS data, drawing conclusions, communicating results, interpretations and recommendations You will proactively manage bioinformatics projects
Technology scouting and innovation
Identify computational methods and other opportunities to improve and speed gene discovery Evaluate new technologies and create business cases for implementation You will stay up to date with state-of-the-art bioinformatics techniques and be an advocate for integrating improved technologies into existing workflows
Cooperation and collaboration
Together with Genomics and Molecular Breeding teams collaborate in developing databases, gold standard reference genomes, high quality gene annotation and functional genomics integrative tools that facilitate gene discovery
Your Profile
Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Plant Sciences, with a clear computational component Strong knowledge of machine learning libraries (e.g., Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch) Above-average knowledge of at least one programming language (R, SQL, Rust, C) Project management experience with the ability to coordinate and deliver on multiple projects in parallel Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation using relevant software and tools Strong communication and presentation skills (English)
Skills & Experience
Proven expertise in creating and support digital solutions for biological challenges Strong ability to create scalable and maintainable software in python Proven competence in usage of software-development best practices (version control, TDD etc) Familiarity with version control systems such as Git Experience developing bioinformatics workflows in Snakemake and working with HPC environments is preferred Experience with comparative genomics approaches, functional gene annotation is desirable

Location:
The job is located in the village of Nunhem in the south east of the Netherlands. Internationally known cities on a commute distance of 45m to 1hr are Eindhoven (NL), Maastricht (NL) and Dusseldorf(DE).
Remote work:
Part of the week can be worked remote, the other part at the BASF| Nunhems global head quarters campus in Nunhem. The exact amount of days that can be worked remote depends on the job, and (not our choice but bi-country tax law) which side of the NL/BE/DE border you have primary residence.
