How to draw density plots for multiple groups with annotation

Hello, I would like to draw a histogram with annotations like the one below. The figure is from Liu et al 2021 Genome Research (https://genome.cshlp.org/content/early/2021/12/28/gr.275453.121.full.pdf).

Any pointers or package suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
