Question about analyzing data in high perforfmance computer.

Hello to everyone.

I am trying to figure out the means of analyzing ngs data. I am a masters student and my supervisor suggested me that if I would like to I can try analyzing some RNA-Seq data that the lab recently obtained. I have a basic laptop with intel i7, 8gb ram and a 256gb ssd. They told me that if I decide that I want to try analyzing the data they will give me access to the university server. Does that mean that I will exclusively use the server resources for the analysis and my laptop will be only the mediator or I still need a more powerful laptop for the analyses.

If you can get access to a server then you are best served going that route. In that case your laptop will only be used to SSH to the central server and you can probably leverage a job scheduler and significantly better resources than your local laptop.
