The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is an internationally recognized non-profit organization, dedicated to biological and biomedical data science. Its data scientists are passionate about creating knowledge and solving complex questions in many fields, from biodiversity and evolution to medicine. They provide essential databases and software platforms as well as bioinformatics expertise and services to academic, clinical, and industry groups. SIB federates the Swiss bioinformatics community of some 800 scientists, encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing. The Institute contributes to keeping Switzerland at the forefront of innovation by fostering progress in biological research and enhancing health.

To reinforce our team in Lausanne, Switzerland, we are seeking a Research Scientist.

Job description Deciphering the molecular mechanisms of NASH: NASH remains widely untreated, and it has become a critical public health concern with high unmet medical needs. Thus a better understanding of the disease molecular patterns is key to identify new targets and biomarkers. In this context QUID NASH PPP (launched with ANR since November 2017) aims at delivering multimodal non-invasive biomarkers to constitute a virtual liver biopsy for NASH diagnosis and assessing mechanistic pathways for better drug development. APHP, SIB and Servier are responsible for multi-omics (e.g. genetics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, UFUS, MRI) data analysis to achieve the objectives of the project. Therefore we propose to lead a Research Scientist on deciphering the causal mechanisms underlying NASH from both animal and human multiomics data, leading to better disease characterization, preclinical model evaluation and proposal of innovative targets.

Job tasks

  • Characterization of the NASH Disease through multiblock unsupervised analysis, such as ComDim, based on uni-block modules. The list of activated pathways will be evaluated based on transcriptomics modules through functional enrichment (e.g. WGCNA).
  • Preclinical model will be evaluated based on network comparison (gene expression & connectivity) and gene co-expression preservation (module by module comparison) in order to identify the animal closest to human physiopathology
  • Innovative targets identification through NASH gene network analysis based on both OMICS QUID data and public data sets

Profile requirements

  • A PhD degree in a STEM field (computer sciences, physics, engineering, etc.)
  • Previous experiences in OMICs data analysis WGCNA, multi-OMICs integration and NASH/NAFLD applications
  • Background in biology or bioinformatics
  • Strong interest in biological data interpretation
  • Fluent in R and others scripting languages could be an asset
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English

Type of contract: temporary (18 months) Expected start date: 01.09.2021
