Why Are Refseq Ids And Genbank Id / Embl Ids Mixed?

Hi there,

I am pretty new to this field and I found that RefSeq IDs and EMBL (Genbank) IDs are mixed sometimes.

When I looked this up at NCBI I found: "RefSeq sequences are derived from GenBank and provide non-redundant curated data representing our current knowledge of known genes."

But why is that? Why not providing either RefSeq or Genbank IDs?

I am working with RefSeqs in my workflow. Can I map all Genbank IDs to RefSeqs and go on?

Thank you very much!

Yes, you can. Sequences with known biological meaningful function are indeed supposed to map to a RefSeq ID (and most others do as well).
