Postdoctoral Scientist in Plant Computational Genomics

€ 39,800 to 57,500 (TV-L 13) depending on qualifications and experience

The Department of Plant Physiology (Professor Ute Krämer) at the Ruhr University Bochum in Bochum, Germany, has a vacancy for a postdoctoral scientist in Computational Genomics. Ruhr University Bochum is one of the prime research universities, and the Department of Plant Physiology is among the best supported, in Germany. In order to gain insights into adaptation and evolution, our group combines state-of-the-art molecular functional, genomic, genetic and population genomic approaches. As a compelling model organism, we focus on the extremophile sister species of Arabidopsis thaliana named Arabidopsis halleri (http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/pflaphy/Seiten_en/index_e.html).

The post holder will investigate the genetic basis of adaptive traits and of their inter- and intra-specific variation, and examine evolutionary genome dynamics, in plants. He/she is expected to make a substantial contribution to the assembly and/or annotation of the A. halleri genome. Another major responsibility will be the use and development of comparative genomics approaches for the analysis of nucleotide sequence data (genomic DNA, RNA, small RNA, epigenetic modifications) of large numbers of A. halleri individuals in conjunction with phenotypic data. Data from 2nd generation sequencing and other platforms will be analysed both quantitatively (transcript quantification, gene copy number determination) and qualitatively (multi-parallel genotyping at high marker density), using multivariate statistics, quantitative genetics and population genetics approaches. The post holder will coordinate and conduct their research in an independent but highly collaborative manner, with very close interactions within the Department of Plant Physiology and with close collaborators through the Priority Research Programme 1529 (www.adaptomics.de).

Thorough knowledge and practical experience in programming in R/bioconductor, MatLab and/or Perl are required. Experience in the analysis of 2nd generation sequence data and database handling is highly desirable.

The post involves a moderate amount of teaching and student supervision as well as organizational tasks. The post holder is expected to obtain next-level qualifications, depending on the current career stage (e.g. acquisition of grant funding). Particularly highly talented, qualified and dedicated candidates for a PhD will also be considered.

Within the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology at Ruhr University Bochum, the Professor of Bioinformatics (Axel Mosig), as well as the Department of General and Molecular Botany (Dr. habil. Minou Nowrousian), the Department of Evolutionary Ecology and Biodiversity of Animals (Dr. Florian Leese) and the Laboratory of Geobotany (Prof. Dominik Begerow) share related research and methodological interests.

At the Ruhr University Bochum, we seek to promote in particular the careers of women. Therefore, we are encouraging applications from female candidates. Applications from suitable candidates with severe disabilities are also most welcome.

Please send your application, including documents of your qualifications, by 28 February 2013, to:
