Applications are invited for a Research Fellow Biostatistician in the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology to work on multimodal data collections as part of a translational genomics programme within the group of Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, joining an established team comprising bioinformaticians and clinicians with a track record of innovation and high impact research in epilepsy genomics. The post holder will employ statistical expertise to design, implement and evaluate methods for integrating and analysing data sets arising from epilepsy research projects, aiming to advance precision medicine approaches in epilepsy.
The post is based at the well-known Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy with translational research facilities and onsite laboratories and Queen Square, London. The main purpose of the post is to advance understanding of the epilepsies through detailed clinical, investigational and genomic evaluation in a large cohort of people with well-characterised epilepsies. The post holder will be responsible for a range of research activities, amongst which will be working closely with the group bioinformaticians in the team on genomic, clinical and other data in epilepsy, and close collaboration in research projects aiming for clinical application across the group, and through collaborative external projects, such as with Genomics England Ltd (100,000 Genomes project) and other national and international initiatives. An important strand of the group's research is to develop formal quantitative multimodal analyses, for example as used in recent work (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/470518v1).
Applicants should have a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Neurological Genetics or a closely related discipline, and a research record in journals within the areas of Statistical and/or Population Genetics including at least one first author publication based on the PhD project and subsequent projects. Expert knowledge of working in a Linux server environment is essential as is hands-on, extended experience with scripting and/or programming for bioinformatics (Bash, C, C++, Python), and practical knowledge of PLINK, GATK, ANNOVAR, VEP, Picard, and various NGS data handling tools. Experience of handling public repositories such as ENCODE, EcAX, gnomAD, 1000 Genomes, DECIPHER, EVS, and other appropriate repositories and dealing with large datasets, and strong data analysis skills are also required.
The post is available immediately, funded by a grant from the Epilepsy Society to November 2023 in the first instance. Starting salary on UCL Grade 7 in the range £36,028 - £40,125 per annum including London Allowance, superannuable.
