I'm far from an expert in biology, so perhaps this may sound as a stupid question to you.

During dinner, I had a discussion with my father about whether or not it is possible for two people of the same gender to produce a child. My father argued that if it was possible, then this would already be happening. I agreed with him, but I figured it's possibly already happing while I'm unaware of it. I thought it might be handy if a homosexual couple could have a child by means of some kind of in vitro fertilisation. Of course one has to be careful not to put together two Y chromosomes (in case two men want a child), but two X's or an X and an Y would be fine.

So the question is: Is it possible? If not, are there any indications that this might be possible in the future?
