Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) is seeking applications for two (2) faculty positions in general bioprocess engineering, with an emphasis on either microbial fermentation and mammalian cell culture or downstream purification processing. The successful candidates will join a strong team of faculty and staff within the ABC, and will also be part of a larger interdisciplinary faculty within the Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences at KGI. The new faculty members will teach within the Master of Engineering in Biopharmaceutical Processing program within the Amgen Bioprocessing Center, and also contribute to bioprocessing focused courses within the Henry E. Riggs School’s broader industry focused graduate curriculum. KGI supports research, and the successful candidate will have opportunities to pursue research projects both within the ABC and with the broader KGI faculty community. Depending on previous experience, the new faculty members will be hired at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Education and Experience: PhD in chemical engineering, bioengineering, or another areas related to bioprocessing. Industry experience, postdoctoral research experience, and teaching experience are all desirable but not required. Experience with continuous bioprocessing, process analytical, or data analytics would be considered a plus.
Areas of Expertise
- Generally Bioprocess engineering for both positions;
- Emphasis on Bioreactor engineering for biomanufacturing of microbial fermentation and mammalian cell culture;
- Emphasis on downstream processing operations including primary harvest, purification, polishing and formulation. Understanding of the Atka systems is a plus.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

- Teaching lecture and laboratory based courses in at least some of these areas: microbial fermentation, mammalian cell culture, bioseparations science and engineering, and principles of bioprocess engineering.
- Advising in the relevant areas within capstone Team Design Projects (TDPs) for biomanufacturing of biologics.
- Advising teams of students pursuing industry sponsored Team Masters Projects (TMPs) in the area of bioprocessing.
- Supervising PhD and postdoctoral researchers within the Amgen Bioprocessing Center.
- Pursuing scholarships and grants from funding bodies (federal agencies, foundations, corporations)
- Collaborating with the KGI admissions team in student recruitment events.
- On-going contributions to service activities within the Amgen Bioprocessing Center, the Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences, and KGI. Service typically includes serving on committees, participating in student recruitment activities, and performing special tasks or administrative assignments as may be assigned by the Director of the Amgen Bioprocessing Center or Dean of the Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences.
