Forum: Posting a preprint paper on biostars.com

Hi Biostars,

Is it allowed to post a preprint version of a paper on biostars.org and ask biostars to give any useful comment? I mean that there are many knowledgeable people here on biostars.com who can be helpful in improving a paper. Is it allowed according to policies of biostars.org? Sorry if this is not the right place to ask this question.

I think it is as good venue to share your research as other. Perhaps here there are more expert than other forums, so it might be worth it.

Hi statfa,

No, sharing a preprint and asking for feedback is not against the biostars policies. You can do that, but you would be the first to do so :-) Congratulations thus. I like preprints, and have published preprints myself. So feel free to share your paper after you have submitted it to biorxiv or similar.

By the way, at least biorXiv has their own comment section. It would be best to ask us to comment over there, rather than having our comments get lost in a thread here on biostars.

So you are free to ask for feedback, it's of course not guaranteed that you will get comments.

honestly, I do not think that many people will put in the effort of comprehensively reviewing a "random" (no offence meant) paper. Still, if you upload it on a preprint server, e.g. the biorxiv, and then point out a few specific sections (also using the appropriate tags in the post) that you think need revision, I could imagine people might look at it. Technically, it would be a normal bioinformatics question, given that you ask specific enough about the technical details of your work.
