The University of Bergen (UiB) is an internationally recognised research university with more than 14,000 students and close to 3,500 employees at six faculties. The university is located in the heart of Bergen. Our main contribution to society is excellent basic research and education across a wide range of disciplines.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in Computational Biology

There is a vacancy for a 3 years position as postdoctoral research fellow at The Computational Biology Unit, Department of Informatics and Department of Biological Sciences. The work will be done in the Valen lab which is also affiliated with the Sars Centre, an EMBL node. The starting date is flexible.

Please see the announcement on Jobbnorge for more information and to apply. Deadline Sunday, April 15, 2018

About the project/work tasks

The successful applicant will use and develop computational tools to analyse gene expression data in order to identify regulatory pathways related to non-optical light detection and nutrition in teleost. The main model will be Atlantic salmon that have went through a recent whole genome duplication and have a life history in both freshwater and seawater.

The position is linked to two projects: the nation-wide project "Towards the Digital Salmon: From a reactive to a pre-emptive research strategy in aquaculture (DigiSal)" which is part of Digital Life Norway and to "The effect of narrow banded LED light on development and growth performance (PhotoBiol)" which is part of the Aquaculture program. The PhotoBiol project is in collaboration with professor Helvik's lab. He/she will work with several colleagues at other institutions which will complement his/her analysis and findings.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within the field of bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.

We expect the applicant to be familiar with genomics, transcriptomics and gene regulation in general.

Techniques required for this research project include machine learning, pattern discovery, modeling of gene expression and evolutionary biology. The applicant must have significant experience with some or all of these.
