We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to undertake research in the area of agricultural bioinformatics.
The University of Melbourne is one of the leading tertiary institutions in the world with a strong reputation for academic excellence. The scientists at the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences undertake cutting-edge researching a number of disciplines related to plant and animal sciences, with strong links to industry, policy making and the community at large.
The project: The rapidly growing world population and changing climate, provide scientists with an unprecedented challenge of feeding almost 10 billion people by 2050. At the same time adverse weather conditions cause major crop losses world-wide. The project aims to apply computational approaches to analyse large scale genomic and transcriptomic data in order to understand how plants respond to environment and promote development of improved, more sustainable crops.
The successful candidate will obtain comprehensive training in diverse aspects of bioinformatics analysis and translational research. He/She will have access to leading computational facilities at Melbourne Bioinformatics and opportunity to partake in national as well as international collaborative efforts. The candidate is expected to have obtained a degree (Hons 1st class or Masters 1stclass) in biology or related field, including at least a semester of molecular biology/genetics. Experience in computer programming is not necessary, but strongly encouraged and will provide an advantage. Ability to write computer programs will be crucial for successful project completion, therefore aptitude and willingness to learn are paramount. We expect the candidate to apply for a Melbourne Research Scholarship that are awarded on a competitive basis.
The Melbourne Research Scholarship (Stipend) and Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship(Stipend) provide the following benefits:
- a living allowance of $30,000 per year (2018 full-time pro-rata rate) for up to 2 years for students undertaking a Master by research degree and 3.5 years for student undertaking a Doctoral by research degree.
- a relocation grant of $2,000 for students who need to move from outside Victoria or $3,000 for students who need to move from outside Australia to study at the University of Melbourne
- limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave
