This is misleading, because although the NextSeq has 4 lanes, they aren't physically isolated and only one pooled library can be used, unlike the physical separation in the HiSeq. I think this is normally what people are looking for when asking about number of lanes.

- MiSeq - 1 lane cells
- HiSeg machines had 8 lanes in High Output Mode and 2 lane cells in Rapid Mode (only for HiSeq 2000/2500 or other too??)
- NextSeq - 4 lanes
- X Ten - 8 lane cells
- NovaSeq S1, S2 - 2 lanes flowcells
- NovaSeq S3, S4 - 4 lanes flowcells

Lanes on NextSeq/NovaSeq flowcells while physically distinct are NOT so fluidically. Same sample (pool) goes on all "lanes".
Edit (2019): With the release of XP protocol for NovaSeq it is now possible to have distinct lanes on all NovaSeq flowcells as in separate sample(s) pools can be loaded on one flowcell.
Edit (2022): There are 2 "lanes" on a NextSeq P3 flowcell but they are not fluidically distinct. Data is reported for two lanes unless no lane separation option is used for bcl-convert.
