When I want to do study about Identification and characterization of any specific genes and the evolution of these genes across other metazoans, what is the good study steps to cover it?

I am not sure how to ask the right questions but I mean is this enough to do phylogenetic tree analysis to cover all side about the gene evolution? or there is other method to be follow!

For gene identification I used bioinformatics methods to identify and characterize the gene BUT I am only confused about the second part of the study which is the evolution!
