rare variant associations due to skewed distribution?

Hi, I have heard that (even a slightly) skewed distribution of a quantitative trait can drive the association of rare variants, I'm not sure what the theory behind it is, can someone explain?

forget the distribution of quantitative traits. How do you propose performing an association to rare variants anyway?

This is a guess. But if the quantitative trait is on a bell curve and you skew it in one direction, then you may consider the possibility that rare eQTLs are responsible.

For example, assume trait X is skewed and 1% of individuals show < q units of X, the genetic variants responsible for this quantitative shift must be rare to account for these 1% of individuals.

However if you're referring heterogeneity I don't know how to correct for that.
