Calculating gene regions?

Hi,

I got completely confused on how the gene region is expressed. Is it in base pairs or kilobases?

If for example I have the region: 1:19991779-20006055 and I want to add 20kb on it, how would that be expressed?

Can someone please clear that up for me?

Coordinates like that are always in bases, so add 20000.
