Introductory biology/bioinformatics course, workshop or conference for programmers

Hi all,

We are looking for a good biology or bioinformatics course, workshop or conference to get one of our recent team members up to speed. He has a strong background in IT but close to zero knowledge of biology. He will contribute to the development of some applications we are developing in the field of clinical cancer genomics (targeted gene screens, clinical reporting, etc).

While there are many courses on programming+bioinfo for biologists, there seem to be few courses on biology+bioinfo for IT people. A NGS data analysis workshop would be useful if the biology/genomics prerequisites are covered from scratch with some details. Something broader than NGS might be useful too. Or an IT-people friendly conference.

Something lasting several days seems appropriate. No preferred geographical location.

Many thanks for your suggestions.

Best,
Alex

They are designed as professional development courses for biologists and computer scientists. Advanced Sequence Analysis has a broad introduction to the biology.
