News: Free interactive bioinformatics course with browser terminal simulator and real datasets
I built BioSkills Lab(bioskillslab.dev), a free, self-paced bioinformatics course that runs entirely in the browser.
Course covers:
- Unix/shell, Python (Biopython), R (ggplot2, DESeq2, Bioconductor)
- Sequence formats (FASTA/FASTQ), QC, alignment (BWA/STAR), SAM/BAM
- RNA-Seq differential expression, variant calling with GATK
- Reproducible pipelines with Snakemake and Docker
- Three end-to-end projects on real data:
- Mystery Microbe identification — SRR24043640
- RNA-Seq analysis: GSE52778 (dexamethasone response)
- Variant calling: NA12878 (GIAB benchmark sample)
Also includes a Statistics for Biology course15 chapters covering distributions, p-values, multiple testing, regression, PCA, and experimental design. Based on Motulsky's Intuitive Biostatistics and ISLR.
Built-in terminal simulator supports grep, awk, cut, sort, samtools-style commands, no local setup needed to start practicing.
Everything is free, no account required.
