Can anyone suggest some good introductory materials on the topic of ancestry methods?

My ultimate goal is to be able to take a VCF file from a human's WGS data and attribute ancestral groups to that human. I expect there are many software tools than can accomplish this goal and am eager for suggestions of which to use but I am also interested in good explanations of how these methods work and what the relative strengths/weaknesses of various approaches are.
