The Department of Public Health at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as either Tenure Track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in the field of Biostatistics as per 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a permanent full-time position.

As an acedemic staff member at the Department of Public Health, you will be part of an ambitious and internationally recognised department, where we work together to promote public health through research into areas that can prevent, treat and alleviate disease. We are involved in broad collaboration both internally and externally. We share our knowledge with citizens, decision-makers, business and industry, practitioners and other researchers – in municipalities, in the regions and both nationally and internationally. The department either contributes to teaching in medicine, public health science, sport science, optometry and nursing. At the Department of Public Health, you will have approx. 200 colleagues, including ninety academic staff members and a corresponding number of PhD students. Your job responsibilities as Tenure Track Assistant professor

As a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Biostatistics your primary tasks will be research and research-based teaching. You will teach and supervise students at Bachelor and Master levels, and you will contribute to the development of the department through research of the highest international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with both Danish and international colleagues.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of the highest international quality, including publication.
  • Teaching, guidance and examination of Bachelor’s and Master's degree students, as well as possible supervision of PhD students.
  • Contribution towards attracting external research funding.
  • Collaboration with relevant national and international research environments.
  • Consultancy as part of the faculty’s Biostatistical Advisory Service

Your job responsibilities as associate professor

As an Associate Professor of biostatistics, you will contribute to the department’s biostatistical research and teaching environment and to the faculty’s overall research strategy. You will contribute to the development of the department both independently and in collaboration with others via your research of high international quality. You will ensure that your teaching maintains a high academic and didactic standard. You possess excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network, which you are able to bring into play in your contribution to the academic development of Aarhus University and its profile both nationally and internationally.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
  • Teaching and supervision of Bachelor and Master degree students and contribution to the development of new teaching activities.
  • Contribute to external research funding.
  • Supervision of PhD students and contributing to the development of the faculty's PhD courses.
  • Involvement in assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
  • Dissemination of your research to the outside world.
  • Consultancy as part of the faculty’s Biostatistical Advisory Service.

You will report to the Head of Department of Public Health.

Your competences as tenure Track Assistant Professor

You have independent research-related qualifications at a high international level. You are a clear communicator and you have experience with supervision and teaching at Bachelor and Master degree levels and the potential of becoming a successful group leader. Completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar will be a plus, as will experience with the establishment of PhD courses and external research collaborations. It is an advantage if you have stayed at or been employed at one or more internationally recognised research institutions. We expect you to have a solid background within theoretical statistics, for example a Master's degree and/or a PhD degree within theoretical statistics. It is an advantage if you have prior experience as biostatistical consultant within health science.

Tenure track positions are usually aimed at candidates who have not previously held an assistant professor position. In order to be assessed as qualified for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Your competences as associate professor

You have established yourself as a prominent researcher within biostatistical research and you possess documented solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level. You have broad international cooperative partnerships and experience of research partnerships with private and public-sector stakeholders, and you have the potential of becoming a successful group leader. At the same time, you have experience attracting significant competitive research funding from national and international funding bodies. It is an advantage if you have stayed or been employed at one or more internationally recognised research institutions. We expect you to have a solid background within theoretical statistics, for example a Master's degree and/or a PhD degree within theoretical statistics. It is an advantage if you have prior experience as biostatistical consultant within health science.

As a person, you are dedicated and possess excellent communication skills. You are able to build relationships based on trust with students, colleagues and partners. As a lecturer, you communicate the latest and most relevant knowledge in a committed, clear and comprehensible manner. As a supervisor, you are competent, inspiring and supportive.

You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

The process The tenure track position starts out with appointment as assistant professor with a view to permanent employment as an associated professor.

Permanent tenure as an associate professor is conditional upon you being assessed as qualified as such no later than 6 months before the expected transition to associate professor at the latest. In order to be assessed as qualified for an associate professor position, you must meet these academic criteria.

You will be appointed a supervisor by Head of Department and evaluation meetings will take place at least every half year.

Required qualifications - Assessment as assistant professor

Appointment as assistant professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level.

For an applicant to qualify for a tenure track position, these academic criteria must be met in addition to the requirements described in the job advertisement.

Terms of employment (tenure track assistant professor)

  • Further information on the appointment procedure can be found in the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities.
  • The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
  • The yearly base salary for a fulltime assistant professor is between DKK 465,475.74 and DKK 517.872,14 depending on the years of working experience after achieved MSc degree. The base salary includes a position related supplement and pension (17.1 %). Additional supplement(s) for special qualifications can be negotiated. Authorisation supplement(s) will be granted, if relevant for the position. Your local eligible trade union representative at Aarhus University negotiates your salary on your behalf.
  • Researchers recruited from abroad are offered a special researcher tax scheme with a lower tax rate.
  • Travel and moving expenses may be covered according to the employee in question and, to a limited extent, the accompanying family.
