Job: Bioinformatician job in UNC's School of Public Health

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Epidemiology is seeking a bioinformatician who will support epidemiologic and virology research projects. Specifically, this position will support the research endeavors of Ralph Baric’s laboratory within the Gillings School of Public Health. The scope of work within the Baric lab includes research involving coronaviruses, Dengue virus, and human norovirus.

This position is responsible for designing, scripting, and implementing bioinformatics analyses of varied datasets across multiple projects, visualizing results, and writing accompanying text for grants and publications.

Required qualifications: Experience analyzing bulk RNA-seq data sets and single-cell RNA-seq data sets. Experience with GWAS (genome-wide association studies) or WGS (whole-genome sequencing) project participation as the main analyst or in a team setting. Proteomic and/or metabolomic data analysis expertise. Knowledge of data security principles. Demonstrated ability to work independently, set priorities appropriately, and organize workload effectively. Demonstrated experience with multitasking, attention to detail, meticulous record keeping, and reorganizing tasks according to shifting priorities. Must have the ability to effectively communicate technical information to non-technical project staff and be comfortable working closely with all lab members, which range from faculty to students.

Preferred qualifications: Familiarity with basic Linux operating system administration: distro-install, setup, update, maintenance, networking, and security. Familiarity with software installation on Linux system: source code, compilers, libraries, etc. Familiarity with common file transfer protocols, encryption, and file integrity checking: sftp, globus, MD5sum, etc. Proficiency (intermediate level) in one or more of the programming/scripting languages, in order of preference: R, Python, Perl, Shell script, Java, SQL. Understanding of basic concepts of relational databases, and familiarity with commonly used Bioinformatics databases: NCBI, UCSC genome, ENSEMBL, etc. Familiarity with HPC (high-performance computing) and computing clusters.
