Dept Marketing Statement

Comprising diverse researchers from a variety of disciplines across academic divisions, the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute leads UC Santa Cruz's efforts to unlock the world's genomic data and accelerate breakthroughs in health and evolutionary biology. The Genomics Institute involves approximately 90 personnel, participating in projects supported by funds from the federal and state governments, private gifts and foundations; in addition the GI provides funding support for approximately 50 additional personnel for GI related projects. Our platforms, technologies, and scientists unite global communities to create and deploy data-driven, life-saving treatments and innovative environmental and conservation efforts, while addressing the most fundamental societal and policy questions.

The California Department of Public Health Pathogen Genomics team at the GI uses the latest sequence analysis and visualization technologies to facilitate outbreak investigation and research for public health responses. Job Overview

Uses skills as an advanced, specialized bioinformatics programming professional with an in-depth understanding of computational algorithms to identify and resolve a wide range of highly complex issues / software bugs where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Implements workflows submitting consensus genomes to our existing analysis tools and to those developed by other UC laboratories via "dashboards." Performs quality review to ensure submission of viral sequences to public and research repositories. May lead or mentor a team of bioinformatics programming professionals.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $100,300 - $110,000/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties

25% - Applies advanced bioinformatics concepts to design, develop, modify, debug, and evaluate highly complex software programs and web tools. Implements workflows submitting consensus genomes to analysis tools.

25% - Conducts advanced bioinformatics programming and testing of new algorithms that will interact with other related databases. Performs quality review to ensure submission of sequences to repositories.

25% - Formulates logic for new systems, devises logic procedures, prepares flowcharting, performs coding and data analysis, and tests / debugs highly complex programs. Implements tools for streamlining pairing of metadata with sequences for visualization.

10% - Recommends and implements changes in development, maintenance and system standards for analysis algorithms, tools, and infrastructure.

5% - Develops and implements web interfaces to share and display the bioinformatics analysis and content with collaborators and other users. Develops methods for geographic/genomic co-visualization using google maps API.

5% - Interacts with senior level internal personnel.

5% - May lead a team of bioinformatics programming professionals.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.
  • In-depth knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.
  • Advanced understanding of relational databases, web interfaces and operating systems.
  • Advanced project management skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at all levels in the organization, including senior project leadership.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Advanced ability to interface with management on a regular basis.
  • Advanced problem solving skills.
  • Ability to lead a team.
  • In-depth knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
