The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) has recently announced their second annual Wikipedia competition. The idea is twofold: to get more scientists interested in editing Wikipedia and to improve Wikipedia's coverage of bioinformatics/computational biology topics.
Any student or trainee internationally can sign up to improve or create a new computational biology related article, and in four months time the most improved (as judged by a panel) receives one of the following prizes:
- 1st prize - $500 (USD) and 1 year membership to the ISCB.
- 2nd prize - $250 (USD) and 1 year membership to the ISCB.
- 3rd prize - $150 (USD) and 1 year membership to the ISCB.
As an example, for my entry last year I rewrote the European Nucleotide Archive article. The announcement also notes that to those teaching, entering the competition could work well as an assignment.
