I actually got Phylogenetic trees made easy it made my dissertation easy and made for an easy read as I don't enjoy reading I prefer hands on learning. It was the easiest read ever.

Just finished going through this book. I'd say that this should be the required text for an introductory bioinformatics course or for anyone looking to get into the field. It focuses on developing the practical skills and good habits to get started. It's a crash course in Git, UNIX commands, R, Python (less so, however, I'd recommend additional tutorials in Python to compensate).

I'm 50% through and I wanted to add it to my own thread :P

I wouldn't recommend it to beginners like lab biologists though, the author himself said here (and in the intro too AFAIK) that it's more on an intermediate level since it assumes a fair amount of prior knowledge - it does assume that you know how to use the shell, know the basics of a Linux file-system, you know how to "think" like a programmer etc.


You could go through it as a beginner and immediately look at the recommended text once you hit a hurdle but I assume that would be very frustrating.
