Creating A Bioinformatics Support Unit

Hey Guys,

I am hoping to get informed responses (and personal experiences) relating to the logistics of setting up a BSU. This unit will analyse RNA-Seq, Microarray, GWAS and Exome sequencing data.

Please advise on cost, linux cluster set-up and other hardware. Any advise on marketing strategies and expected revenue will be helpful too. Also advise on any challenges and pitfalls to avoid.

Hello Casey, I understand the reasons for closing my last post. However, although the topics are similar, this post requests details pertaining to the logistics of creating a BSU not the personnel required. Perhaps the title can be changed leaving the post open.

Given the number of comments asking for clarifications on what the title means it might be best if you reposted the question with different title and focus. Once there are many side comments the question gets a bit derailed from its original purpose.

Given the warm welcome of closing the door in your face, I understand if you don't want to repost the question. Your question seemed clear enough to me. I would only comment, given the mix of language in the responses so far, that language is important (i.e. relevant to your marketing effort) in describing what you want to set up. In my view, words like "core" and "facility" are poisonous if you aim to build a group of expert people with experience. However, I also realize that you were asking more about overall logistics. Nonetheless, clarity around the concepts of group, unit, facility, and core, are important for the mix, however you construct it.

I'm sympathetic to both views here... the question is very broad, but clear in a sense and without question related to this forum. You might consider asking a few sub-questions so that you can get more relevant answers, instead of people addressing 4 topics in each answer.

Your question encompasses a lot:
