Usefulness of clustering experimental groups to visualize outliers and heterogeneity

Hello, Pardon the newbie question. I have a set of DEGs from two experimental groups in comparison to controls. I have built a heatmap and clustered the DEGs. I was wondering if it would be useful to also present group clusters. I realize that the gene lists are already selected because they are different between the experimental groups and the controls, but since those are clinical samples, maybe clustering could highlight outliers and group heterogeneity. What do you think? Do you know some published results that were presented in that way? Thanks!

Which genes would you use for these "group clusters"? In a standard clustering you will see how the replicates per group compare based on the DEGs, isn't that what one is typically interested in?
