Forgive me for asking what is probably a basic question, but what is the purpose of CNV segmentation in most copy number algorithms? It seems to me it just derives clusters of averages that best describe the actual copy number data, but there is so much variation in the actual copy number data that I'm not sure why it is useful to average it as such.
